Online vs desktop tools
Online tools like Braille.tools, ABC Braille and BrailleTranslator.org run in any browser with no installation. They are ideal for quick translations, learning, and occasional use.
Desktop tools like BrailleBlaster and Duxbury DBT require installation but offer more control over formatting, batch processing, and embosser integration. They are better for daily high-volume production.
The choice depends on your workflow: occasional use favors online tools; daily production favors desktop software.
Language support comparison
ABC Braille has the broadest free language support with 20+ languages including Arabic, Chinese, Korean and Japanese. BrailleTranslator.org covers 7 European languages.
Braille.tools currently focuses on English UEB Grade 1 and Grade 2. This is narrower but allows deeper optimization for the most common English braille use case.
If you need non-English braille, ABC Braille or BrailleTranslator.org are good free options. For English UEB, all three produce comparable output using Liblouis.
Image recognition capabilities
Braille.tools and ABC Braille both offer image-to-braille recognition. Braille.tools uses AI-powered dot detection with editable results. ABC Braille uses PyTorch-based detection derived from Angelina Reader.
BrailleTranslator.org and BrailleBlaster do not have built-in image recognition. They focus on text translation only.
For scanning embossed braille from photos, both Braille.tools and ABC Braille are viable free options. Accuracy depends on image quality, lighting and braille type.
API and integration
Braille.tools is the only free tool that offers a REST API for programmatic access. The public beta supports text-to-braille, back-translation, UEB Grade 1 and 2, and Unicode/BRF output.
If you need to integrate braille translation into your own application, website, or workflow, the Braille.tools API is the most accessible option.
BrailleBlaster can be scripted but requires local installation. RoboBraille offers email-based automation but requires institutional agreements for commercial use.
